Koreans use the word “우리 (woo-ri)” a lot.
“우리” means “our” or “us.”
For example, how do you refer to your own country?
“My country”?
In Korea, people usually say “우리나라.(woo-ri-na-ra)”
It literally means “our country.”
Of course, it does not mean that Korea belongs only to a certain group of people.
It is just a very natural Korean expression.
Let’s look at some common expressions with “우리.”
- 우리나라 (our country / Korea)
- 우리 집 (our home)
- 우리 가족 (our family)
- 우리 엄마 (our mom)
- 우리 아빠 (our dad)
- 우리 언니 (our older sister)
- 우리 오빠 (our older brother)
- 우리 회사 (our company)
Even if you are the only child in your family, it is still natural in Korean to say “우리 엄마(our mom)” when talking about your own mother.
As you can see, Koreans often say “our” even when English speakers would normally say “my.”
So why do Koreans use this expression so much?
Some people say it is because Korean culture is more relationship-oriented than many other cultures.
Korea is a society that has traditionally valued community, family, and group relationships.
This can be a beautiful thing.
In difficult times, people may try to care for each other first.
They may worry about you, help you, feed you, and treat your problems almost like their own.
But of course, there can also be a downside.
If someone values privacy very strongly, Korean culture may sometimes feel a little too close.
People may ask too many questions.
They may try to help too much.
They may get involved more than you expected.
These days, personal privacy has become more important around the world, and Korea has also changed a lot.
So this kind of atmosphere is not as strong as before.
But still, Korea is definitely a community-oriented society in many ways.
So if you are a very individualistic person, life in Korea may sometimes feel a little uncomfortable.
Now, let me tell you one funny thing.
In Korean, there are different words for older siblings and younger siblings.
For younger siblings, Koreans say “동생(dong-saeng)”
It does not matter if the younger sibling is male or female.
But here is the funny part.
Koreans often say “우리 엄마(woo-ri uhm-ma)”, “우리 아빠(woo-ri appa)”, “우리 언니(woo-ri un-ni”, or “우리 오빠(woo-ri oppa)”
But people do not usually say “우리 동생(woo-ri dong-saeng)”
They usually say “내 동생(nae-dong-saeng)”
It means “my younger sibling.”
Why?
Because a younger sibling is not something you share with others.
A younger sibling is your own legally assigned little minion. Haha.
Just kidding.
But honestly, if you have a younger sibling, you probably understand what I mean. 😁
