Have you ever heard of “Temple Stay”?

Korea does not have an official state religion, but Buddhism has had a big influence on Korean culture and history.
About 16% of the population is Buddhist.
For reference, about 50% of Koreans have no religion.
Until not too long ago, many people thought of temples as places mostly visited by older people.
But at some point, temples became places that anyone could visit more easily.
The quiet and peaceful atmosphere of Buddhist temples gives you a sense of calm that is hard to find in the city.
Also, temples in Korea have a special openness.
Even if Buddhism is not your religion, you can visit without feeling too much pressure.
That makes it easier to casually visit a temple.
Temple Stay is an overnight program where you stay at a temple and experience temple life.

I went on a temple stay at the very end of summer.
I stayed for one night, and it was a very quiet and happy time.
However, the temple I visited had a few different program options.
I chose the experience-type program.
But the schedule was tighter than I expected, so I was actually busier than I thought.
Next time, I definitely want to try the relaxation-type program.

I think that may be a better way to fully feel the atmosphere of the temple.
I could not film many parts of the stay because I did not want to disturb other people or the program.
But I will briefly tell you what I did during those two days.
First, we learned basic temple manners.
Then a monk introduced us to the temple.
We learned how to bow while praying, and we also practiced meditation.
We made lotus lanterns and bead bracelets.
There was also time to drink tea with a monk and listen to his stories.
And in between, I played with the temple cats too!

Oh, and one more thing.
Meals at temples are usually vegetarian.
I really love meat, so I was a little worried about temple food.
But it was so delicious that I ate until I was full.

These days, many Koreans visit temple stays.
But originally, Temple Stay was created as a program for foreign visitors.
So many temples may offer programs in English.
If you come to Korea, I recommend trying a temple stay at least once!
